He was born in London. Punjab was something he only ever heard about in his mother’s stories. 🌧️
Then one wet morning at a bus stop, a girl from Punjab walked past him — chunni on her head, desi jutti on her feet, books in her hand, talking to her mother on the phone in Punjabi without a single English word in it.
He opened his mouth to say something. The words wouldn’t come.
“ਪੰਜਾਬਣ ਲੰਡਨ ਵਿੱਚ” is a song about a second-generation British Punjabi who realises he isn’t looking for a girl at all — he’s looking for a part of himself he let slip away.
(Punjab never came here on any plane — it came hidden in the corner of a dupatta.)

Lyrics
I saw one Punjaban, here in London…
I was born here, went to school here, Punjab I only heard in my mother’s stories, went to the village twice, came back with photos, my heart still stayed caught right here. Standing at the bus stop, fine rain coming down…
Tick… tick… A desi jutti shook the whole street!
No dhol played, no song either, a crimson chunni came up on the wind, for one moment everything stopped… and she took my breath away with her!
Chunni on her head, desi jutti on her feet, it feels like Punjab itself is walking, here in London. Not old-fashioned thinking — a woman with a mind of her own, a suit on her, and a book in her hand — here in London.
Punjaban, here in London… O beautiful one, here in London… My heart says Punjab has arrived, one Punjaban, here in London…
On the phone to her mother in Punjabi, not one English word in it, books in her hand, keeping her jutti out of the rain, in her own world, not a care for anyone. I went to say something — the words wouldn’t come, the one that was mine, that’s the one I’d forgotten.
The bus came, she got on, I stayed exactly where I stood, the crimson chunni out of sight… and the street turned grey again.
Whether Southall, whether Ealing, whether some street in Hounslow, now I go looking in every face for one glimpse of my own Punjab.
I was searching in the wrong place all along… What was seven seas away was standing at the bus stop. Punjab never came here on any plane, it came hidden in the corner of one dupatta.
O Punjab’s own daughter, here in London! Chunni on her head, desi jutti on her feet, it feels like Punjab itself is walking, here in London, I wasn’t after a pretty face, or a bit of fun, I was looking for my own Punjab — right here in London.
Punjaban, here in London… O beautiful one, here in London… I called my mother, my hand shaking… “Mum… leave the photos… teach me Punjabi.”
